Dalmatian sunset lake water

dog-friendly swimming guide

As a dog mom to two energetic Australian Shepherds, the exercise doesn't stop just because it's hot! I've scoured dozens of local swimming spots within an hour of Des Moines to find the best ones that are dog friendly and safe to swim in. That's why I've put together this list of locations to help you keep your dog comfortable in the summer heat!

FYI - all of the images shown here were taken by me! If you'd like to capture images like these of your dog, contact me and we can schedule a private dog photoshoot!

01. saylorville lake

There are tons of places to access the shore of Saylorville lake and let your pup swim! Most of the boat ramps have sandy beaches that you can walk along to find some privacy. If you'd like to add a walk to your lake adventure, Red Feather Prairie has beautiful trails that lead down to a long sandy beach!

02. big creek state park

I LOVE Big Creek State Park! You can stop at almost any of the public shelters or pull-offs to find shore access, but my personal favorite is the Cadet Shelter. This lake is also great for fishing, walking, disc golf, or just having a picnic!

03 - Maffitt Lake

Maffitt lake is an absolute hidden gem about 30 minutes from Des Moines! It's a day use lake, but it gives the feeling of a large campground that's tucked underneath hundreds of beautiful oak trees. It has the perfect combo of large green space, hiking trails, and lakeshore to have fun year round. It's also perfect for paddle boarding as no motorized boats are allowed on the lake, but a permit is required from the Des Moines Water Works. You can find privacy and solitude in one of their many picnic areas that are tucked in the trees.

04. raccoon river park

Raccoon River Park is a popular park nestled between West Des Moines and Valley Junction. It has a large outdoor sport complex, a huge dog park, a playground, a swimming beach (unfortunately no dogs allowed), and tons of wooded trails. Blue Heron lake is situated in the middle, and if you walk around the edge you can find many spots to access the shore to let your dog swim! This lake is usually quite busy, so coming on a weekday or early in the day gives you a better chance to find a spot to yourselves.
